Award Honors Outstanding Public Health Initiatives

MENANDS, N.Y. – October 21, 2011 -- The longstanding affiliation between Health Research Inc. (HRI) and the New York State Department of Health (DOH) facilitated the response to a public health crisis, earning the partners a 2011 Vision Award from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO).

ASTHO Vision Awards honor outstanding initiatives that use a creative approach to address public health needs or problems. HRI and DOH were commended for their collaborative and effective management of federal emergency response funds for the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. HRI Executive Director Michael Nazarko accepted the award at ASTHO's annual meeting in Portland, Ore. on October 21st, 2011.

H1N1 influenza emerged in the spring of 2009. Federal emergency response funds were released in July, just weeks before a second wave of the virus was expected to hit. With some urgency, vaccines purchased by the federal government had to get into the hands of health...

Fast, Easy and Affordable Solution to Ensure Compliance

MENANDS, N.Y. – October 6, 2011 -- Health Research, Inc. (HRI), a not-for-profit established in 1953 to manage sponsored research and public health funds, today announced the launch of We Certify, a new web-based effort certification system designed specifically for nonprofits to ensure compliance with federal effort reporting regulations under 2 CFR Part 230, formerly OMB Circular A-122.

Officially unveiled on October 6 at Camp Finance, a financial management conference for nonprofits sponsored by the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON), We Certify enters the market at a time when government oversight and audits are on the rise and penalties for non-compliance with federal regulation can cause material damage to a nonprofit.

"Until now, nonprofits did not have an efficient or affordable way to address the complex, time consuming and potentially costly issue of effort reporting certification," said Mike Nazarko, Executive Director of HRI. "We built We Certify from...

MENANDS, N.Y. – March, 2011 -- World-class scientists, clinicians, caregivers, advocates, and government and industry leaders gathered this month to discuss genetic diseases of children and mobilize efforts to improve early diagnosis and health care services, and spur research for new therapies.

Convened by the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and sponsored by Health Research, Inc. (HRI) and others, the Genetic Diseases of Children: Advancing Research and Care conference brought 500 attendees to Manhattan on March 8 and 9, 2011. The meeting drew praise across the board -- from patients and parents, advocates and experts – and calls for future such forums.

Nicole Boice, an invited speaker and founder of the RARE Project, reported on the Network's blog that: "Most conferences discuss theories, postulate and talk a lot about 'what can and should be done' about a topic. The GDC Conference created an agenda that successfully worked to change that. The producers of...

New Protease Sensing Detection, Mapping and Diagnostic Tool

Menands, N.Y. – December, 2010 – Health Research, Inc. (HRI) has announced that Cut-N-Glow, a new protease sensing detection, mapping and diagnostic tool for diagnostic and scientific research, is now available for commercial development and can be licensed through HRI's Technology Transfer program.

Cut-N-Glow is the first fully biological, gain-of-fluorescence protease activity sensor system. Developed by scientists at the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center laboratory, Cut-N-Glow triggers a green fluorescent "glow" when pathogens are present. Light emission can be followed quantitatively using a fluorimeter, or qualitatively by eye as the assay solution turns green.

Our assay is easily tailored via standard cloning techniques to detect proteases of varying specificity, to identify protease inhibitors, or to map protease substrate preference in vitro or in vivo. It's also efficient and...
