HRI has developed the pay guidelines for hourly interns (students). We are no longer using the title of summer intern as the need for inters occurs throughout the year. These rates will remain in effect until further notice.
| Classification | Hourly Rate of Pay | Experience Required |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduates | $11.00 - $16.00 | Dependent upon availability of funds on the grant, responsibilities of the position, previous experience, and education relative to the job. |
| Graduate Students | $12.00 - $26.00 | Dependent upon availability of funds on the grant, responsibilities of the position, and previous experience. |
| High School Students | $8.75 - $11.00 | Dependent upon availability of funds on the grant, coursework related to position, and previous experience. Effective December 31, 2015, the minimum pay rate will increase from $8.75 per hour to $9.00 per hour. |
Those students who are part of the Graduate Research Assistant Program (GRAs) will continue to receive from $875 – $1,030 per pay period during the summer months.
All interns are considered temporary, hourly employees, with no provision for benefits at this time, with the exception that they have the option of joining the retirement system. There is the possibility that under The Affordable Care Act, HRI will need to offer health insurance to hourly employees who work an average of 30 hours or more per week during their first year of employment. In general, employees in hourly positions work a variable (as needed) schedule. On occasion and for a limited duration, an hourly employee may work up to 37.5 or 40 hours per week.
All requests to hire interns must be approved through this department as well as through the normal approval channels of your particular program.
The fringe rate for hourly interns is 8.4%. For those interns who elect to join the retirement system, the fringe rate is 26.1%.
Note: Due to tax implications, changes in employment status need to take place at the start of a pay period.
