USG released a policy, effective 9/24/15, for “Institutional Oversight of Life Sciences Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC)”. In summary, “Dual Use” research is that which is normally directed to peaceful purposes that could be misused for hostile purposes, and in this case we are talking about the use of toxins/pathogens.
Research subject to this policy includes:
1. Research that involves any of the 15 agents or toxins listed in the USG Policy – see below.
2. Research that aims to produce one of the seven listed experimental effects list in the USG Policy.
3. Research that meets the definition of DURC.

(Note – the only current DOH/HRI program that may be subject to DURC is the Biodefense lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Wadsworth Center.)
The HRI-50 has been updated to reflect this new requirement. Please transition to the new HRI-50 at your earliest convenience.
